"Spain! Don't aim that way! You almost shot France!"

You hurried over and caught the piercing arrow in time. The afternoon was a very sunny and cloudless day. You figured it was about time to teach your children how to defend themselves and hunt.

So far, Spain wasn't that good with a bow. And France certainly did not do well with a dagger. They had chosen their preferred weapons from your shed and started practicing enthusiastically. For half an hour, the dummies were still intact.

France stubbornly stabbed the dummy over and over again, but barely dented its straw figure. Spain was trying to aim with the bow, but hardly shot it any farther than a few feet.

 "We stink.."

"Don't say that! You're doing very well!" you encouraged, "Maybe its perhaps your weapon selection." You led them to the shed, which they followed behind. Opening the silver door, your battle supplies were lined up into very neat rows. Your gloved hand ran over the handles of the swords and axes.

You looked down to see the row of axes, ranging from small to large. You picked out a medium sized one and handed it carefully to Spain. He took it and swung it over his shoulders, grinning.

Eyes of yours were scanning over your swords. You chose a small fencing sword you had used for practicing. You passed it to France. He quickly held it up to the air, triumphantly. You smiled at the children's expression on their new weapons.

You were glad you chose the right ones, Spain was already slashing at the straw dummies with his axe, chopping off their heads, one by one. France was, fortunately not destroying your army of practice dummies, but he did manage to stab repeatedly at them, causing straw to spew from the behind at every blow.

"Alright, you guys are doing spectacular!" you cheered, "Keep practicing and you'll soon be better than me!"

"Really?" The countries' eyes widened to a very joyful extent. And til this day forward, you've never seen children demolish straw dummies at a rate of lightning.

---
The practice had went well. You soon had a relieved feeling arise in you. They would be fine countries later on, and they would be strong. They could defend each other and not get harmed. As much as you thought about their futures, you began to get a bit worried about if they got into war. But soon, your thoughts were interrupted by Spain.

"Mami," Spain tugged your cape gently, "Are you a conqueror?"

France joined in, "She said she wasn't.. Are you?"

"I'm not a conqueror, boys," you laughed, "I'm just a small empire over in the West."

"You're more than that, Maman!" France smiled.

"I'm not sure, France. I'm not very old in this world.. I don't know much about other countries," you paused, "But, that's why I always have an urge to explore and learn more about the other kingdoms. I want to see them grow up to be a great empire."

"You are a great empire!" Spain urged. "You're the best of all the best!"

"I'm afraid I'm not," you smiled, "Rome has that crown in the bag."

"But, your heart is better than his!"

"I'm just an explorer, boys. You guys are just so cute!" you hugged them. You felt the two children move in your arms, Spain pointed his small finger at France, sticking out his tongue.

"My Mami's an explorer!" Spain bragged to France.

"Hmfp! So is my Maman!" France shot back, crossing his arms over his small chest.

"Boys, calm down," you smiled, "I'll be back soon. Who wants me to hunt deer tonight?"

Both of them shot their hands into the air, waving energetically. "I'll take that as a yes then. You boys behave yourself. I'm going out to hunt."

 ---

You trekked through the small forest, looking for any signs of wildlife. So far, your eyes could only spot small rabbits, which you never had to heart to hurt them. Your boots quietly stepped over the sticks on the ground, avoiding any loud snaps or crunches of the leaves and branches.

The trees towered over you, causing few sunlight to reach the bottom, but specks of prisms of light showed here and there, just enough to provide a safe path for you to walk on. Your ears detected a small crunch to your right, shifting slowly, you saw a large deer, grazing the small spots of grass on the forest floor.

He was surrounded by a few other does and deer. You sighed. You quietly left the area, feeling a bit distressed. You didn't kill the deer since he was probably a father with those other offspring. You hated killing creatures. But, this was the only way to have a meal.

Sighing, you continued to walk slowly through the invisible path you remembered.

Snap.

You turned your head, to see a deer alone. He was wandering away from his herd, unfortunately. You whispered a small prayer, right before you shot a direct arrow at its neck. Its body fell to the floor with a loud thump. Laying motionless, you got out your bag and started to carefully take out the arrow. Gently placing him into your hunting bag, you stood up, but groaned under its weight.

"I'm sorry. I give you my sincere thank you and prayers for a good afterlife," you mumbled. Walking back towards your house, you heard a small creak above you.

Looking up, you saw a small boy, wrapped in a white tunic, trying to grab at a small yellow chick, a few inches above him. Straining his arms, he stood up on the slim branch. Your eyes widened as his small black boots took a small misstep and lost balance.

He yelled loudly as he fell downwards to the ground, about 40 feet above you. You dropped your hunt and held out your arms, hoping to catch him in time. His body twisted in midair as he landed on you. Crushing you to the ground, your head was covered into the forest's dirt and fallen leaves.

Feeling the body move, you let out a sigh of relief. Carefully getting back up, you wiped your face and looked at the young boy in your arms. He groaned as you shifted him onto the ground.

"Are you okay?" you asked quietly. His eyes shot open and stared at you with wide eyes. You were taken aback from his crimson eyes, but they seemed to be quite the nice match for his platinum-blonde hair.

"The E-empire of ______!" he stammered slightly as he shifted back away from you. "Wegbleiben! My Vati told me to stay away from you!"

"Its all right. Calm! My weapon's away," you said. He grabbed at his wooden sword at his side, holding it in a defensive position, with a sturdy hand. The boy eyed the large bag dipped in crimson from the blood of the deer. "This a deer. What can I do with it? Swing it at you? I won't harm you, promise. Do you want me to take you back to your father?"

His eyes started to flinch, "V-Vati's gone.. The village of Germania got attacked.."

"Don't worry.. I know that many people say Germania is very strong. He'll survive," you comforted the boy. "He'll come back."

"No, he won't! He sent his pet black hawk to carry me away from the raid!" he yelled angrily, "B-But, it got its wing harmed from the attack and accidentally dropped me in this forest!" By now, tears had started forming on the child's face, running down his cheeks. "He only uses his hawk in emergencies! He's not coming back.."

You felt really bad for this child. You knelt down, in front of him, wiping the tears from his face. "He'll come back.."

The child's red eyes stared up at you, a bit redder than it normally is from crying. He gruffly wiped away his tears, sniffing. "Yes.. Vati's strong. He will come back," he said quietly. "Thank you for saving me and Gilbird.."

The child picked up his wooden sword, carved skillfully probably by his father, and helped the small yellow chick onto his shoulder. He started to walk away from you. You reacted quickly and raised your hand and waved to him.

"You can come live with me for now. I won't mind at all!"

He turned his head, looking at you for signs of lying or dishonesty. "You can trust me."

"D-Danke.." he murmured. You smiled as you lifted him onto your back and picked up your hunt. Starting on the path out of the forest, he soon got more comfortable on your shoulders. The tears had ceased and a small grin was spread across his face.

 "What's your name?"

"The Awesome Preußen, son of Germania."
